Learning Experience Design

As part of my LXD graduate certificate, I worked as a student resident with the Center for Academic Innovation, where I collaborated with CAI staff and U-M faculty to create novel learning experiences through different modes of instruction, predominately using Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), blended learning, and Teach-Outs.

e-sports working group

The e-sports working group is a brainstorming initiative that includes staff from all CAI areas focusing on how we can turn this subject into open opportunities for new projects. The group's current direction is a deep-dive into the world of e-sports and sourcing different forms a project with this topic could take. We are also reaching out to staff and faculty at the university who may want to contribute their expertise to this subject matter. Some themes of recent meetings include:

  • The business side of e-sports; steamers, pro-gamers, and streaming as a revenue source

  • Collection about gaming contextualizing cultural significance, athletics (what e-sports even are), skills involved, etc.

  • Gender diversity for this group and considerations for e-sports more generally

  • Demystifying games/gaming

  • Games’ impact on the educational landscape

Visualizing Women's Work

Visualizing Women’s Work (VWW) is a MOOC based on U-M faculty member Melanie Manos's initiative of the same name from the Stamps School of Art and Design. The course focuses on experiential insights into the artistic process, conveys the power and validity of art/design for addressing issues of social justice, and illustrates both creative practice as a form of research and the role of research in creative practice. I worked with Melanie, the Design Manager, and the Learning Experience Designer to contribute to the high-level course design document, develop personas, source case studies, prototype the course layout, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals/challenges, and content activities. Current topics include:

  • Visual literacy

  • Critical Assessment of Public Visual Culture

  • Gender Bias in Public Historical Culture

  • Media of Different Forms

  • Social Justice

  • Making Visible and Raising Public Consciousness

  • Women’s Work

Resilient teaching

Resilient Teaching Through Crimes of Crisis and Change is a MOOC developed for educators in the pandemic era. When I started my residency with the CAI, I conducted background research for an iteration on this MOOC that integrated the Nintendo Switch game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH). I did a thorough analysis of how different areas used the popular game, including the Ann Arbor District Library, the Detroit Lions, and Joe Biden's presidential campaign. After the analysis, I proposed a write-up to the LXD to include ACNH in the Resilient Teaching course in an inclusive way that added value to the learner's course experience. You can enroll in the course here.
